My hallway and entryway are much darker than the rest of the carpet. Can that come out?

Usually a good portion of it, but be realistic about how much. Compton sits close to the 91, 710 and 105. Surface cleaning the carpet face only removes a fraction of it, which is why the odor returns in a day or two once things warm up. Treating it properly means flooding the affected area with a treatment that reaches the pad and slab, extracting it, and in bad cases pulling back the carpet to address the concrete directly. If the pad is gone, we'll say so rather than cleaning it three times.

Our carpet is original to the house and has to be 30-plus years old. Is it even worth cleaning?

We extract as much moisture as the equipment will pull before we leave, so you're not depending on a system you don't have. Light foot traffic in socks is fine right away. Wait until it's fully dry before putting furniture back on it.

Same-day is sometimes possible, especially for a single room or an apartment unit turnover, but it depends on what's already on the schedule.
